When you bring that horse home the upfront cost is the cheapest part of horse ownership. You now have the responsibility of this horse's future. None of us know what lies ahead, what the future will bring. So, you need to set this horse up for success. How do you do that? Believe it or not, there are people out there that do not understand the expenses involved with running a horse training business. When they see the monthly training fee getting close to $1000 per month, they cannot get past it. So, they put off training their horse for another year. Problem with that is...as time passes, expenses increase so prices go up, the horse gets another year older, etc. Next thing you know the horse is 6 years old and now training costs even more. An older horse isn't quite as willing as a younger horse. Young ones are like a sponge. Older ones get a little more set in their ways. But let's break it down. A well-run facility has a feed program that they follow. A good feed program includes a lot of good quality hay. Horses are grazing animals and we all need to remember this when caring for them. When in training they also require some type of "grain". This will be to help with their stamina, keep weight on and keep them healthy.
